A Wine Magazine Cover Mockup

Inspired by an appreciation for wine, my concept for a magazine cover suggests a playful publication about wine culture and communicates a brand identity that attracts a young and adventurous audience.

ILLUSTRATIVE MARKETING

The applied media methods course was designed to permit students to examine software used to create new content, to practice developing media in common presentation and distribution formats, and to demonstrate technical skill in working with a variety of software relevant to media design while synthesizing design aesthetics and creative problem solving into the production process.

My favorite project that I completed in this course was a PSA (Public Service Announcement) poster for a for a cause of out choice. We were instructed to implement the “works-every-time” layout method described in our textbook, White Space is Not Your Enemy. Chapter 3 of the text outlines the components of the works-every-time layout which includes outer boundaries and margins, columns, visual and optional cutline, headline, copy, and tags, and explains how best to place these components.

I decided to create my PSA to bring awareness to the services of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a nonprofit organization in Monterey, California dedicated to conservation of marine habitats. Their pioneering research and conservation programs are notable for their focus on sea otters. My poster, which was designed to encourage donations, displays an original illustration of two sea otters floating along while holding hands with happy expressions on their faces. The headline of the poster is a light-hearted, humorous pun derivative of the term “significant others”.

This project was enjoyable because it presented an opportunity for me to practice the design softwares I had become familiar with during my time in the Electronic Media Technology program at UC Blue Ash. In correlation to the learning objectives of the BTAS program, the project offered additional and valuable experience by prompting me to consider how visual communication can be applied to express the missions of an organization and engage audiences to take some sort of action. In this way, the PSA poster project emphasized the “evaluate the implications of emerging media trends in communication and workplace practices” program learning objective.

“Cocktail Time”

This concept would work as a poster for a trendy restaurant’s happy hour!
